Curacao Kampioenschap 2016
Last weekend the Curaçao Sunfish Sailing Association organized the 43th National Championship for the Sunfish class. Sunfish sailors battled on Saturday and Sundays for the prestigious title of champion of Curaçao, both days with plenty of wind, competing on long distance courses in the morning and short ones in the afternoon. This popular class on the island has even produced world champions for our country in the past. The local sailors were joined by six fierce competitors from Bonaire whom sailed all the way from this neighboring Island to race. Derek Bongaertz dominated the competition ending on top with an 11 points advantage and sailing a total of five bullets. Sipke Stapert from Bonaire ended the weekend in second place while multiple former champion Jürgen Schneider took third place. Bongaertz (17), also won the Youth title followed by youngsters Tijn van der Gulik and Darius Bérénos, these three sailors will represent Curaçao in November at the Sunfish Youth World Championship which will be organized in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.
