2022 Sunfish Worlds report

In unusually shifty breezes in Galveston Bay, Venezuelan Eduardo Cordero held on to first place after 8 races in the 32nd Sunfish World Championship. Held Oct. 6-12, 2002 and hosted by the Houston Yacht Club. It was the second time the club hosted the Worlds. A field of 65 boats fanned out over Texas waters to challenge the 5 time champion Cordero.

Day One of racing opened with a first race with light wind of 5 knots to gusts of 7 knots and sunshine. Setting early pace was Eduardo Cordero with fellow countryman Eduard Gonzalez in second, John Kolius (USA) was first of the home sailors in third place overall.

The fleet was returned to the harbor after race one, having to shelter from a violent thunderstorm that shattered the previous sunshine of the day. When racing eventually got underway again at 1510 hrs in only 5 knots of wind it was Kolius who lead, and won the race, followed by Bishop Stieffel (USA) and Jean Bergman (USA) in third.
