Curacaos Kampioenschap 2019

Curacaos Kampioenschap 2019

Last weekend the Curaçao Sunfish Sailing Association (CSSA) organized her 45th Curaçao Championship. The Sunfish Class has been a highly popular locally for more than 5 decades. Spread over last Saturday and Sunday, 11 sailors sailed 9 races. The younger talents, dominated the field, the seventeen year old Darius Bérénos scoring 7 bullets and making a perfect net score considering his 2 discards. Among the participants 4 former multiple Curaçao champions, Alex Roose, chairman of the CSSA and champion in 1986 and 1996, Jürgen Schneider (1981, 2008, 2009 and 2013), Hans van der Gulik (1984, 1985 and 2006) and Niek Kort (1991, 1992, 1993 and 1995). But finishing overall second it was Bas van der Gulik, Darius his sailing buddy since their very young Optimist years. Hans van der Gulik finished third, while Bruno Brouwers took the bronze in the youth category. Traditionally the new champion was treated to a plunge in the Spanish Waters after receiving the traditional and very desired perpetual trophy. Next week 10 of our sunfish sailors will participate at the International Sunfish Class Association, Sunfish Worlds 2019 which will be organized in Bonaire.
